Its in the Sauce

Last night our wheat spaghetti was topped with sauce straight out of the garden. We're just now picking copious amounts of Roma and grape tomatoes and with so many ripe at the same time - they were just begging to be simmered down with sautéed onions with our fresh basil, oregano, and a few banana peppers for flavor. A few hours after I shot this photo Paul and I were sprinkling my favorite Pecorino Romano on our spaghetti and punching play on the last disc, the last episode of the original Battlestar Galactica.

Did you know there's a tri-colored tomato that's called the Mr. Stripey? How fun is that?! There's a whole article on tomatoes in the newest issue of Cooking Light, and they mention all sorts of different varieties I've never seen before--and likely can't buy locally, mores the pity.

Oh, and I almost forgot, there's a missive winging it's way to you (or meandering via pack mule at the rate it usually takes in these parts) via the US Postal service.

And I've heard all sorts of good things about "Battlestar Gallactica" (I remember watching the 80's version on tv as a kid) from people who normally wouldn't be interested in such things. Makes me wonder if you've ever watched "Firefly." I think you'd love it, actually.

Isn't homemade sauce great? Lea does a killer job with stuff from our backyard.

That last episode would be "The Hand of God," would it not? That was one of my favorites--great action and suspense.

I loved the original. I'm just now watching the reimagined series. I've watched the pilot and the first two regular-length episodes so far. I'm impressed with it; it's very well done.

(And Mary McDonnell is dreamy. Yes, my current #1 celebrity crush is 56 years old. Sue me.)

One more original BSG note.

My dad and I enjoyed laughing about this back in the day: So after the first couple of episodes when Baltar's got command of the base ship and he's sitting up on that throne/column thing, Lucifer comes in periodically, and they talk about how things are going. Then he just spins back around.

So what the hell does he do up there the rest of the time?

Anne - I've seen the funky hybrid tomatoes ... but never grown any - I'll have to try to find some seeds and try them out maybe.

Bo - LOL!!! you know I was wondering the same thing... Maybe he's got a big screen TV up there... and that's the best seat in the house.

And the new BSG if pretty fracking good too - I'm just bummed I have to wait to see the first 1/2 of the 4th season - whenever they release it on DVD. Right now I'm stuck with Starbuck coming back... and the groovy "all along the watchtower" scene.
